Integrated M.Sc. Course

Admissions and Counseling
Students seeking admission to CBS has to appear for a National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) that is conducted at a large number of centres in India. NEST is a common screening test for both CBS and our sister organization, NISER, Bhubaneswar Selected students are called for counseling and admission to CBS. Provisional allotment of streams of integrated M.Sc. course are made at the time of counseling and students are required to pay fees and other charges in full amount on the date of admission

Fee Structure
The fee structure at UM-DAE CBS is as follows:

    General Category students: - Rs 1750/- per semester
    Reserved Category Students: - Rs. 75/- per semester

In addition students pay nominal rent of Rs 600/- per semester as monthly rental for hostel accommodation; boarding facilities are be made available on payment of actual costs (approximately Rs.2500/- per month)

Curriculum
The curriculum for the first two semesters (first year) will be common to all students, and specialization will begin with the third semester. The core courses in the subject of specialization will provide strong foundations in both theoretical and experimental aspects of the discipline. In addition, students will be required to go through a certain number of courses in other subjects also. All students will go through a small number of compulsory courses covering topics like science communication, history and philosophy of science, environmental and energy sciences, and world literature. The fourth and fifth years of the M. Sc. (Integrated) programme will be devoted to advanced courses in specific disciplines. In the fifth year every student will undertake a substantial guided research project which, in the best cases, will develop into a full-fledged doctoral-level research project. The outcome of the fifth-year project will be reported in the form of a thesis. Throughout the five-year programme, students will be encouraged to take up summer projects in reputed national laboratories and universities. Eminent scientists from India and abroad will regularly give colloquia and seminars and interact with the students. This has already started, with an active Tuesday Colloquium series in place. In short, the CBS curriculum is designed to ensure depth in the area of specialization together with breadth of exposure and intellectual enrichment, and to prepare each student for a high-level professional research and development career in national laboratories, universities and industry.
