CEBS is glad to announce that Professor S.M. Chitre and Prof.Raghunathan have been awarded the prestigious
Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.

Prof. M.S. Raghunathan did his schooling in Chennai and obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Mumbai while he was a student at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.  He joined TIFR as a Research Assistant and was soon promoted as an Associate Professor at the age of 25.

His main areas of research are Lie Groups and Algebraic Groups

Among the numerous awards and honours bestowed on him are Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, TWAS Prize, Srinivas Ramanujam Medal, S.N. Bose Professorship, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

He is a Member of the Academic Board of CEBS.

Prof. S.M. Chitre did his Bachelors from the University of Mumbai and University of Cambridge, and Masters and Ph.D. also from the University of Cambridge.

He has been associated with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research for several years and his primary research interests are solar physics, Physics & Astrophysics of Neutron Stars &  Black Hotels and Gravitational Lensing. 

Beginning in the 2001 he has been actively involved in teaching at the University of Mumbai – a passion which he continues to date.  He was actively involved in setting up CEBS right from its inception. 

He has numerous awards and honours to his credit.  Some of them are: Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Member, International Astronomical Union, Fellow of INSA, NASI and NAS, Third World Academy of Sciences, Maharashtra Academy of Sciences, M.P. Birla Award and Padma Bhushan in 2012.

CEBS student Lavish Pabbi (IXth Semester) has been selected for the Photonics Fellowship of India (www.photonicsindia.org)

This is a national fellowship awarded to only about 10-15 students each year for working in the field of Photonics for a period of 3 to12 months. Lavish Pabbi will be working under this fellowship from May to July 2012 with Dr. Sen Mathews at SAMEER, Mumbai.

 
Amit Seta, a student of CEBS, Secured Rank 17 in the National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE) A total of approximately 5000 students appeared for the test that was conducted by IAPT.
