Procedure for obtaining information under RTI 2005

Request for information can be sent by letter, fax or by email addressed to the Public Information Officer, Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, University of Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Kalina, Mumbai 400098. All requests must be accompanied by a demand draft or postal order or money order for Rs 10/-. The DD/IPO must be drawn in favour of UM DAE CEBS.

Those persons who are below poverty line (BPL) need not pay the fees. However, they should submit documentary evidence of their BPL status.

All requests for information under RTI must have the full and complete postal address of the applicant with whom CEBS can communicate to send the reply.

Information about CEBS

4(1)(b)(i) The particulars of its organisation, functions and duties
  The Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CEBS) is a teaching-cum-research institute, fully funded by the Government of India through the Department of Atomic Energy. Currently CEBS operates from the Health Centre, University oif Mumbai, Vidyanagari, Mumbai 400098. CEBS offers Five Year integrated M.Sc. in the four principal areas of basic sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. CEBS is also involved in research in the above areas. There are plans to expand its activities and start graduate studies leading to PhD.
4(1)(b)(ii) The powers and duties of its officers and employees
 
  • The Governing Council is the supreme decision making authority of CEBS.
  • The Director of the Centre is the chief functionary and is responsible for all the activities related to the Centre.
  • The Chairman of the Academic Board, together with the members of the Board, is responsible for all activities related to the students which include time tabling, framing of syllabus, performance of students, selection of teachers, grading pattern of students, assessment/review of research proposals, planning academic activities and other activities incidental to it.
  • The Registrar assumes overall responsibility for matters related to administration, finance and related areas.
  • The hostel wardens oversee matters related to hostels and general discipline of students
4(1)(b)(iii) The procedure followed in the decision making process, including channels of supervision and accountability
 
  • CEBS has been recognized as an aided institution of the DAE in January 2016. The procedures and decision making process is being evolved and will be uploaded. In the meanwhile, the following procedure has been adopted on an ad-hoc basis:
  • All matters related to Administration – Registrar, CEBS
  • All matters related to infrastructure development – Prof. Neeraj Agarwal

4(1)(b)(iv) The norms set by it for the discharge of its functions

  CEBS hold the following records:

  • Academic documents of students and their personal files. Other documents like staff files and faculty files
4(1)(b)(vii) The particulars of any arrangement that exists for consultation with, or representation by, the members of the public in relation to the formulation of its policy or implementation thereof
  The two primary areas of activities of CEBS are research and teaching. Since the research is carried out in frontier areas of basic sciences, there is very little scope for consultative arrangements with members of the general public. As regards student/admission related matters, a separate entity called the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is responsible for conduct of examinations, and the intake of students is based strictly on their performance in the test.   CEBS has been recognized as an aided institute of the DAE only very recently. The budgetary proposals will be forwarded to the DAE and once approved, it will be uploaded.

  CEBS has become an aided institute in January 2016. Work on digitisation of data will commence after funds are released and will be an ongoing process.

About Us

CEBS was set up by the Department of Atomic Energy and the University of Mumbai in 2007. CEBS offers a 5 year integrated MSc program in Basic Sciences, with undergraduate teaching embedded in a postgraduate and research environment, for students who have completed 10+2 schooling or its equivalent.
