The School of Chemical Sciences at UM-DAE CEBS, located in the scenic campus of the University of Mumbai, Kalina campus. We offer M.Sc. (Int.) and Ph.D. program in Chemical Sciences provides vibrant cutting-edge research experience and quality education. Courses in M.Sc. program are taught by several reputed in-house and visiting faculty members from surrounding premium institutes who are committed for quality education embedded in research environment. School of Chemical Sciences offers research in different core areas of chemistry and interdisciplinary research.
Current research areas are:
- Materials for OLEDs: Design and development of organic emitters for harvesting singlet and triplet excited state for efficient OLEDs.
- Photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy: Photosensitizers absorbing in saturated red to near-IR region and capable of producing abundant singlet oxygen are being developed for their biological applications.
- Organic Synthesis and Catalysis: Development of novel efficient catalytic strategies for the C-C and C-X (X= N, S, O) cross coupling reactions, development new ligands for Pd and Cu catalysis. Synthesis of biologically relevant heterocyclic compounds and drug candidates.
- Computational chemistry: Investigation of reaction mechanism using density functional theory (DFT) methods, designing new catalyst based on the computational transition state models.
- Prevention of neurodegenerative diseases: Identification and characterization of the potential inhibitors of α-Synuclein aggregation for development of therapeutic strategies against neurodegenerative diseases.
- Targeting parasitic enzymes for antimalarial therapy: Inhibiting the activity of parasitic aspartic protease plasmepsins (PMs) by natural and synthetic inhibitors/drugs to target malaria.
- Drug delivery systems: Exploring various drug delivery systems for partitioning/loading of drugs in different drug-carriers and the delivery of drugs to the target proteins.
- Integrative Structural Biology: Understanding the effect of small molecules on actin polymerisation dynamics for treatment of actinopathies. Establishing Plasmodium actin regulatory proteins (ARPs) as a drug target against Malaria
- Proteomics and Metabolomics: Using differential Proteomics and Metabolomics of thermophilic bacteria, to identify proteins and metabolites that help thermophiles to survive at extreme temperatures. Also, to identify the potential nano-adjuvant targets from thermophiles
Our educational programs, prepared by experts in the field and continually updated to incorporate the rapidly expanding knowledge base, are designed to provide a comprehensive and rigorous training experience for aspiring scientists. We offer:
- Integrated MSc Program: A curriculum, under the NEP guidelines, combines fundamental as well as advanced courses of theory and laboratory. We also offer several short-term research projects, preparing students for diverse careers in Chemical Sciences.
- Ph.D. Program: Candidates for our PhD program are selected through a rigorous selection process. The program prepares students to conduct independent research and contribute to scientific knowledge under the guidance of our faculty members.
